Video Prototyping: Energise

As part of a week long introductory course on video prototyping at CIID, I collaborated with Filippo to initially create a low-resolution sketch of a fictional service called Energise, followed the next day by a higher resolution, slightly more polished version of the same narrative.

The presented scenario introduces Mario, and describes his experience of using a smart meter given to him by his energy company. It shows that Mario does not understand what that information provided to him by the smart meter might mean to him in practical terms - or how he might reduce his unexpectedly high utility bill. The sketched-out service add-on for the meter gives him an interpretation of his energy usage, making suggestions based on his current usage that might help to reduce his energy consumption - and lower his bill in the process.

The two videos below are the outcomes of this rapid introduction to video as a medium: following brief discussion of storyboarding, planning, shooting, and editing, we had a day to create the first low resolution sketch of the service. After feedback on both the concept and on the technical aspects of filmmaking we had a day and a half to shoot and edit a version with slightly higher production values. Although the second one is slicker and more accomplished in its visual aspects, I actually prefer the rough and ready quality of the first.
